We all know the classic Costner quote from Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.” Well, if you were born before the year 1995, you might do. And you know what, it’s a common misconception that a lot of businesses have come to believe in whenever they get a brand-new website. Having spent all the time, effort and budget on creating the website, they forget about the hard work it takes to build and maintain a digital presence. Don’t want to fall into that trap? We’ve put a bit of advice together about what to do when you launch your shiny new site to the world.
SEO is a long game
You might have done your research, got your keywords in order and added a ton of fresh content to your website, but good SEO takes a while to bed in. Depending on how quickly Google crawls your site, it can take several months for your efforts to truly take hold – so unless your website was already king of the search page, it can take some time to ensure you get the rankings you deserve. Plus, you can’t just leave it, you’ve got to keep up the hard work.
Organic social’s on the out
After the new site’s live and you’ve rattled out a quick email to your existing clients to tell them the good news, the next place you’ll turn to is your own social media channels. There are two problems with this. First, you’re probably still only telling your existing clients (who may or may not already be on your mailing list) about the new site. Second, organic reach is not what it used to be – it’s been shrinking quicker than a Dairy Milk bar these days.
So, no matter how many people share your post about your new creation, there’s a strong possibility it’s just going to bounce around the echo chamber. And, unless you’ve got something really different up your sleeve, it’s not going to make you famous.
If a tree falls in the woods …
You know the old adage – if a tree falls in the woods and nobody’s around to hear it, did it really fall? Same goes for websites. If a website launches without a comprehensive digital marketing plan, did it really launch?
